Thomas Family 2011- Yeah! We are all still alive surviving Northern Virginia! We are all getting into the fall groove of things. Adam is in a small preschool/kindergarten class and he is loving it! Maren is running everywhere- and Steve is loving his job. We love the weekends where we can all just chill out at home. Last weekend my brother visited and we are planning on seeing Steve's family for Thanksgiving. We also bought tickets to Utah for Christmas! YEAH!! We can't wait for all the fun Holiday Festivities - Bring it... Christmas season 2011!

The Most Amazing Chocolate Cake… Ever!

1 Chocolate Cake Mix (any kind, I've used chocolate fudge, Swiss chocolate, or milk chocolate)

1 C Mini Chocolate Chips

1 cup Sour Cream

1 Pkg. of Chocolate Pudding (small 3.5 oz. box)

Prepare cake as directed on box, and add sour cream, pudding and chocolate chips. Pour into 2 9-inch round baking pans. Bake as directed on box (you might need to add a minute or two to the baking time because of the added ingredients). Place on a wire rack to cool.

Equally Impressive Chocolate Frosting

1 cup butter at room temperature

3 oz. Ghirardelli 100% cocoa chocolate bar

4-5 cups powered sugar

milk

So I had yet another surgery in May... this time on my knee. I feel like the past 14 months has been a blur of surgeries and trying to recover from it. But anyways since May I really haven't felt on top of life. There is always laundry, messes, drudgery -etc. So when I saw this on littlemissmomma - I felt like I had so share- Sometimes (most times) I can't articulate what I want to say...and this was perfect!

Sometimes I have one of those days where its harder to get things done.
My mind wanders, I'm not as effective, I forget why I walked into the room.
And then, sometimes one of those days turns into one of those weeks.
Like this week.

As hard as I tried, everything I did seemed to take 3 times longer than it should have.
I used to get down on myself when I had days like these.
But after two years of motherhood, I've learned that this is just part of the territory.
Not only with motherhood, but with life.
Sometimes life takes longer, sometimes we're not at out best, sometimes we only write two blog posts in a week, and sometimes we don't brush our hair.
And you know what?
I think that's okay.

Washington DC with Family

My little niece Kennedy came to visit for a month in June and we had so much fun together. We went to Georgetown Cupcakes, we toured the Capital - when to Great Falls, the Washington Monument, the white house- the Lincoln Memorial and Mt. Vernon! We got to do so much! We miss her like crazy already and hope that she will come back next year.

WOW- What a year!
Here is our year in review-

Maren joined our family February 26, 2010 (what a doll face)
Had complications with recovery had two additional operations

Steve Graduated from VCU with a Masters in Urban and Regional Planning
YEAHH!!!

Steve got a job with ICF International and we moved up to NOVA! (scary)

Traveled to Utah for a family reunion-

Found out in August some devastating news about a family member- changed everything.
I still have huge issues with this... obviously.

Stacie had another operation the day before Thanksgiving...

Enjoyed Christmas with our new friends the Cardwells and Smiths!!!

Maren broke her tibia 8 days after the new year!!

Any who! Steve and I adore our kids and each other and we are grateful for all the we have been given~! I think that that is the most I have ever written on this thing... And just to show how much I never blog... I forgot my password to log on. Haha got to love it.

We Are MOVING!

We are moving to Northern Virginia at the end of the month! We are so excited about this awesome opportunity - Steve got a job with ICF International. He will be a consultant for them. We are so very sad to leave Richmond - we love it here and love all of our friends, but we are also excited to see what the future brings.

Anywho...Adam and Maren are doing great- I can't believe that she is almost 3 months! Adam has been sick this week, but it has been good- I have ironed 20 shirts, packed boxes and cleaned. (Steve's final presentation is this upcoming Tuesday we are hopeful and SO totally STOKED to have grad school over with!! YEAH a billion times!)

Confessions of a Hormonal Wife...

So I guess that I should admit that I am preggers! I am 15 weeks preggo (translation PREGNANT!) We are super excited and scared! We would be more excited if I wasn’t so sick all of the time and generally miserable. I am starting to feel slightly better –but still not up to where I was when I was pregnant with Adam. We are due February 22^nd- Most exciting. So only 5 more weeks til we know the gender. Steve has been my knight in shinning armor. He has taking such good care of me and Adam. He has been so kind and sweet during my “hormonal tidal waves” (as he likes to call them). He told me last night that he didn’t realize how much I do around the house until I got really sick and I STOPPED managing the house. It was sweet of him to say. But things are going better. I am starting to make dinner again – I made Homemade Macaroni the other night ( a first time for a homemade meal in a while) and Steve couldn’t get over how good it was- (Cute huh – because it wasn’t that great!) Anyways

I Hope things are on the up and up!

Top Ten Things I have learned from my Dad...

Well its my Dad birthday today....56...switch that, I mean 65! So I wanted to wish him a very Happy Birthday from his favorite child (Drew, Mindy and Jamie if you are reading this please disregard). So I want to do a Top Ten Things I have learned from Papa Smedley...

10- Education- My Dads side of the family has always been big on education. All of his brothers and sisters and their children ALL have a college education. Now if you sit back and think about that- that is a HUGE accomplishment. When I graduated from Highschool, to me it was just the next thing to do- was to go to College. I am glad that I have learned the importance of an education.

9- Gospel- My parents have both taught me about the gospel and the importance of having a testimony. The best thing about growing up is that we all learned by example- Nothing was forced... except that time that Drew wore a turtle neck to church and Dad made him go home and change!

8-How can a write about my dad without saying something about money. He taught all of us about the importance of using money correctly. Saving was important- but it was important to also use that money to invest in family memories as well. We have had a lot of nice vacations because dad saved his money to go to nice places. Thanks dad.. Papeete (need I say more)

7- Working hard- Every Saturday morning when I was growing up was a time for the family to clean. We all had our chores to do. We cleaned the bathrooms, changed the sheets, mowed the lawn, vacuumed all the rooms. Saturday morning was a time set aside to help with the chores.
I try to instill that into my family today.

6-Persistence is another principle that I have learned from dad. My dad has started a new business at the ripe ol age of 60- He has worked incredible hard, had a tremendous amount of faith and it has really paid off. His Behive Homes is very successful and he is a great owner/manager! He is the only Rest Home in the County that has a waiting list. That is amazing!

5- Faith- Along with persistence comes Faith. Just recently in later years has my dad taught this princple. He has had tremendous faith to start such a business at his age. All of us children - were very concerned when we heard his plans to move up to Utah County and own and manager a care center. But through his trust in the Lord and hours of prayers it was proved more than sucussful.

4-Growing up I also remember every Sunday evening playing Cards... what FUN we had. There is a time to work and a time to play. (I still have never been CAUGHT cheeting... always accused!)

3-My dad loves my mom. Those to have been through a lot together. Its funny how over time couples start to look like one another. They have both grown together and all of us admire their relationship.

2-Laughter is the best medicine. Around the dinner table at our house it seems like that is when the embarrising, "probably should say this" type converstaion would come up. Dad would always laugh and mom would always shake her head and act as if she didn't think that it was equally as funny.

1- FAMILY- My dad has taught me that family is the most important thing in the world. Every year he makes an effort for everyone together. This year he is traveling to Michigan and Virginia for weeks just to be with us and he is always there when someone gets baptised. He loves us all and has a soft spot for everyone of his grandchildren... ( Adam especially)

1/2 Marathon

Well I usually don't write much on our blog, I just post pictures for family and friends, but I thought that I would share that on Saturday I ran the Richmond 1/2 Marathon! I have wanted to run one for quite awhile and I thought that this year was the year. Anyways I was no speedster, but it was something that I wanted to do! Alas I did it! YEAH. Steve was major emotional support and I am so appreciate of him... (Adam too!) We are going to wait to buy the pictures that they took on race day. So hopefully pictures will be up sometime! So fun!!! So here is our Christmas Card Photo... I think!

Well things are still going well. Steve is almost done with this semester! So we are excited to have him home this summer! Yeah! But for Easter we went and visited some friend up in Washington DC - although we have no pictures we had a great time and even got to go to the temple! Then last saturday we went rock jumpin on the James River and had a terrific time.. (although Steve and Adam almost took a plunge...really) We are just enjoying Adam and all of his *hmm "curiosity"...

Christmas 2007

Christmas was really fun this year we had a great time just the 3 of us together.

For Christmas eve we had a beautiful turkey dinner and then we all gathered around and Steve read us the Christmas story from the Bible. Then each of us opened Christmas Pajamas! Christmas morning we woke up and Santa had come. He left a tent for Adam and lot of wonderful gifts for everyone. Adam had fun mostly with all the wrappings! One of his favorite toys though was a tool kit from Santa with a drill and hammer. Afterwards we got all ready and joined Justin and Kari Knight for a wonderful Christmas breakfast. We all love Christmas!

Michigan Trip

Adam and I flew to Michigan to visit my family. While we were there we got to do so much. We went apple picking, shopping, hangin out with the family. Adam had so much fun with his cousins - he is going to miss them. While I was there Drew and I got to run in a 8k race together! We had fun up in MI just hanging out with family. Adam and Mackenzie were the best of friends. She always called him "Baby Adam"... it was cute.

Adam just turned ONE~ Yeah! For Adams first birthday we went to the Wiggles Live. He had so much fun (for about an hour!) But he is one now, crawling, walking along furniture and just about to start walking! Oh and he now officially has 8 teeth! wow

Habitat for Humanity

Steve is now Full-Time Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity in the Tri-Cities Area (Petersburg). We are so excited He is working on 4 houses at the moment and raising money for the affilate. Steve is also continuing school this fall at VCU Virginia Commonwealth University earning a masters of Urban and Regional Planning. Busy busy busy...
